Adventure touring bikes can also be referred to as trekking bikes or bike trekkers. They are very popular with people who intend to go on a self-sustaining bike packing (trekking) trip. For the purist’s bike trekking adventure, camping out under the stars is normally the order of the day. As such the adventure bike needs to be equipped to facilitate the everyday demands of the bike packer. There are many subtle differences between such a bike and the typical road or mountain bike. The frame will have a long wheelbase to allow for better clearance at the front end when carrying panniers and also to provide a more comfortable and stable handing bike. The frame will also have clearance for mammoth mountain bike style tyres which offer better grip and comfort especially when travelling off-road. Additional features of the adventure bike are; various mounting points for luggage, these will normally include fittings for front and rear mounted pannier racks. On certain touring bikes you may also find ‘carryall’ fittings on the front forks, these carryall mounts are like oversized bottle cages mounted on either side of the forks. These are particularly handy for stowing items that can be rolled up, think of sleeping bags, ground sheets and the like. A rider needs to stay hydrated to perform at their best and such a bike will cater for this with additional bottle cage mounts. The traditional downtube and seat tube bottle cage mounts are still present but additional mounts can also be found on the underside of the down tube and on the top tube (cross bar).
