Description
Continental GatorHardshell Folding Tyre - For riders who simply demand the most protective, fast rolling tyre around - Building on the supremely successful Ultra GatorSkin, the GatorHardshell gets added extras in every department - Bead to bead DuraSkin protection - Hardshell casing wrapping further into the sidewall - Extra wide Poly-X breaker belt covers the entire tread strip from shoulder to shoulder - Added material in the tread improves mileage and further increases puncture resistance - Slick tread for exceptional grip in wet and dry conditions - Supple handling and low rolling resistance - Weight: 273g (700x23mm) Cycling Plus rated 9/10: CONTINENTAL'S GATORSKIN IS one of our favourite training tyres. It's very quick and it's tough enough for winter riding, audax and fast commuting - so long as you keep it topped up to its recommended pressure and don't leave flints and the like embedded in the tread. But for those wanting more puncture protection and wear life, Continental has introduced a new Hardshell version. There's a bit more tread rubber, a wider polyester breaker strip under the tread, and a three-ply rather then two-ply polyamide casing to help prevent slashed sidewalls. This adds 48g for our folding 700x23 Hardshell (273g) compared to the equivalent Gatorskin, but in spite of that weight gain we were unable to detect any noticeable difference in rolling resistance between the two tyres even using back-to-back roll-down tests. Among the training tyres we've tested, only the Gatorskin itself and Michelin's excellent Krylion Carbon have been quicker, and while it's early days yet, the Hardshell seems more puncture resistant than either.

Not the tyres they once wereI’ve been a huge fan of the gatorskin hardshells for many years. Commuting into central London covering 26 miles each day I’ve found these to be the most puncture resistant tyres over the last 5 years however this latest set I purchased resulted in 3 punctures in the first 4 weeks. It could be bad luck but I remember the first set of these I had getting on average 1x puncture per year and one of those was my own fault for letting the tyre pressure get too low.
I think I’ll look at the alternatives on the market next time round...these aren’t the bombproof tyres they once were. -
Top-shelf gear! Can’t beat Conti Gator’s and Ribble prices. Love the tires. Wear long and we’ll and very puncture resistant. Good stuff!!

I am on my 3rd set of Hardshells in 5000 miles. These are the best against flats, year round.I'm sold on Continental Hardshells. Tried them with and without the wire bead. Either way it works well. Wired Bead might be a little harder to put on the rim, but seldom needs to come off since they never get punctured and flat. Ribble also has the best price I've found on sites among the A-company, UK and US sights.

Tough and hardwearingRunning 28mm on our tandem at 95psi, seem to be standing up really well. We prefer the 3 layer walls as we have had sidewall failures on other tyres.
Not too expensive either.
