The world's first cycling radar, Varia helps create a safer cycling environment by warning cyclists of vehicles approaching from behind up to 153 yards (140 meters). The radar tail light also warns approaching vehicles of a cyclist ahead. Works independently or integrates seamlessly with compatible Edge cycling computers. Edge computer or Varia head unit can show multiple approaching vehicles and indicates the relative speed of approach and threat level.
Edge computer or handlebar-mounted Varia head unit indicates when one or more vehicles are approaching from the rear
Riders alerted to relative speed of approaching vehicles and how close they are
Tail light unit brightens and flashes to notify approaching traffic of a cyclist ahead
Includes: Varia radar tail light (RTL 500), Varia seatpost quarter-turn mount, Varia universal seatpost quarter-turn mount, microUSB cable, manuals
Radar can't be beat!
I added this light to my kit to improve my visibility and give me an idea when cars are approaching from behind. Age has limited my hearing, so the advanced blip from the Garmin increases my confidence on the road.

Have used the varia vision extensively since purchasing from Ribble for a great price. Nice to have especially with the narrow roads I often ride. Can keep my eyes on the road and be aware of following traffic without having to always look down at the computer or turn my head. Still has the same occasional drawback as the varia vision, not "seeing" a following car going the same speed. Usually hear them anyway or the varia lights up when they speed up to pass. It is expensive, but I highly recommend it for an additional measure of safety.

Bought it for safety - but it has other great value!
I bought this light to increase my awareness of vehicles coming up unexpectedly from behind. Much to my surprise, it is extremely accurate with very few misses or false alarms. The thing I really like about it is that because I can confidently detect approaching vehicle traffic, I can now ride side by side with other risers with more confidence. When I detect a vehicle coming from behind, I slow and drop into single file. This has enabled me to engage in more social interaction with less stress - if you can believe it. A great and unexpected benefit. Combine this with the safety advantage: it is highly recommended.

Good addition to your Garmin set-up
I do most of my riding on quieter country roads - the type where vehicles can quickly, without warning whizz up behind you at speed. So, this is a handy way of getting a heads up. It's paired to my Garmin headset (Edge 1000) and when a vehicle is detected, there's an audible beep and a dot on the screen tracks the progress of whats behind, going from amber, to red as it approaches, then to green when it's passed. It will track up to six vehicles in this way, so if more than one car is there, you know about it.
The advantage here is that you can ride out of the gutter and then move over when traffic is coming.
As a light, it also works pretty well. The LEDs are very bright and you can set them to flash or constant. When nothing is around, 3 LEDs are lit, the number increasing as vehicles approach (as does the flash speed).
The unit has a rechargeable battery and lasts throughout my 3-4 hour Sunday Club ride. Stated battery life on full charge is around 6 hours, off the top of my head.
It's on the expensive side for a light but look at it as a rear-view traffic radar that improves rider safety, the cost starts to look better. Of course, without a compatible Garmin Edge, you do then need to buy the Garmin Varia headset unit.....

Have used the Varia radar light, and it has performed well. It rarely misses following vehicles, only if I have crested a hill or or around a curve where the car was not "seen" beforehand.
As with other Garmin products, it is somewhat pricey, but Ribble has had the best price!

Thanks for your query.
Garmin quote 5hrs constant and 8 hours in flash mode.
Can I buy this if I live in the USA. How is it in us dollars and how much for shipping.

Could you please verify that this model has a flashing mode. I have been reading online that some Varias purchased in Europe only have the steady non-flashing mode due to certain country restrictions on blinking rear lights. I would like a model that has the flashing mode. Thanks.
