This means that we are best placed for offering help and advice for you.BikeBuilder allows you to design your dream bicycle. We stock over 20,000 products, and have everything for the serious cyclist to leisure riders.
Your bike, your way!
The unique selling point of our award winning bike range is that you can choose exactly how you want it to be. Choose the frame, the groupset, the finishing kit. New to riding and struggling with the hills – then choose a gear ratio that makes it easier for you; going for the best time in your triathlon, then choose the lightest components we have! We are also proud to offer our bicycles at a price point that we are confident will beat the competition, as we order direct from the manufacturers and so have no middle-men.
Run by Terry Dove for over 35 years, the Watery Lane shop in Preston was the main focus of the business, with a frame building and paint shop being located close-by. In 1987 we introduced the concept of mail order, perhaps the first bike shop to do this. This idea of buying a part was perhaps alien to many people at the time, but business using this format grew and grew.
In the early 90’s Terry’s son, James, joined the business at a stage when cycling participation was starting to grow, and in 2001 the first Ribble website was launched when dial-up connections were becoming increasingly common-place in people’s homes.
Due to the increased growth of the internet, the success of cycling at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, and increasing sales through the website, in 2004 Ribble purchased a large warehouse in Bamber Bridge so we could carry enough stock to cope with demand. A few years later, and with the big shift to e-commerce, the shop at Watery Lane closed its doors in 2009, with a ‘Reserve and Collect’ feature introduced to the website. Collections were from our warehouse, and be ready waiting within an hour.
In 2013, and again due to continued growth in the cycling market, we moved to our now current Leach Place site, offering a much larger warehouse space, a showroom with our range of bicycles on display, ‘Reserve and Collect’ facility, and of course our workshop to custom build your bicycles.
The time finally came in late 2015 for Terry to retire, with investment coming in from True Capital, with big plans to move the company forward and continue its expansion, with many exciting plans, however still keeping our customers as the main focus of the business.
Ribble ‘Palmares’ – Sporting History
As well as supporting our customers in their own cycling at every level, Ribble Cycles have also had an extensive pedigree in the professional cycling scene. In the early 90’s Chris Boardman was contracted to ride our bikes. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics the women’s time trial team were supplied with Ribble bicycles. We have sponsored the RT Italia race team in the 90’s, supported Steph Forrester, the highest place British triathlete at the Sydney Olympics, and in 2001 were the main sponsors of the Ribble-Pro Vision Race team. You may also have read in the Bradley Wiggins autobiography that it was on one of our bicycles where he started his cycling journey!
We will continue to expand and develop our award winning range of bicycles at the most competitive price possible, as well as increasing the products we are able to offer you from established and new brands to you, our valued customers.
