Light and responsive and yet robust enough to be a go anywhere or winter bike. I tried it first on bridleways SW of York on a wet November day. It handled everything with comfort and style. The simpler 1x apex system being more than capable of coping with the mud that inevitably was thrown at it. The disc brakes are reassuring in the wet particularly with the WTB 2.0” Ranger nobblies that seem to be able to grip on wet limestone and thick mud alike. The gear ratios (42 x 11/42) proved ideal both for off and on tarmac, although a slightly higher gear might be needed if you were to keep up with a fast club road outing. (I've given up trying to keep up anyway).
On this trip I was on 650b wheels but I have since tried it with 700c & 30mm Schwalbe One pros and it goes like a dream. There is a significant gain in comfort with the slightly wider tyres and going tubeless with both the tyre types and all in all I can say that I am a convert to 'Gravel bikes' and to the concept of 'one bike for all'.
Relatively simple bridleways (for ful sus machines) can become quite exciting and much more demanding. When you return to the tarmac you are on a light responsive speed machine. So you get the best of both worlds!
I'm not giving up the MTB or the Road bike yet though!
I was really excited when I found Ribble CGR-SL Gravel bike after long search. I decided to purchase one and I am very happy with the decision. Design, style and components seemed to be very good and they are working perfectly in real life. I took my new CGR-SL directly to my local gravel roads and it was great success. Bike is very responsive and rigid. It's light and agile in narrow paths. My overall experience equals 5 stars, no doubt about that!
