My CGR AL arrived just over a week ago and I have now been out on it 5 times. These have been over different routes, surfaces and of varying length.
I have enjoyed every one of them. The bike is extremely comfortable and the more upright riding position makes me feel more confident. I had not ridden for a number of years until recently.
I can’t wait till next spring and summer when I shall be out on it all day.
Like many, I tried to buy a bike during lockdown and there were none to be had. In my search I visited Ribble Cycles' pages many times, but was put off by the lengthy predicted waiting times. However, the idea of getting a bike directly from the people who made it sounded attractive, and after a number of very enjoyable consultations with the very helpful team through the chat facility, I placed my order for a CGR AL Tiagra. It was great to be able to customise the bicycle, and the layout of the website was quite logical. The bike arrived almost two weeks earlier than the predicted time, which was great. The only assembly required was to attach the handlebars, and there were clear instructions on how to do that in Ribble videos. This is my first 'serious' bike, so if I can do this, so can anyone else.
First impressions were great, the fit looked good, the quality looks excellent, and of course I could not wait to go for a ride. I have not ridden a drop handlebar bike for decades, but it was not difficult to get used to that again. From the off, the bike felt very responsive, and now I know what that means: you press the pedal and it just goes without hesitation or delay. Since I got it, I cycled more than eighty miles in November weather, and I was thankful for the mudguards that seem to weigh nothing and do protect me and the bike very well. During one of the rides my app sent me down a muddy lane that I followed without hesitation. I love that I can ride the way I used to run: if a path looks like fun, I take it without any worry if the bike can cope. It just feels solid.
This is meant to be a bike review, and not a summary of my rides, but somehow that's the point: I just love going out and ride, it just makes me happy. Is this "the best" bike out there? I am no longer sure what that means; it's a great bike for me, and it's perfect for what I want to do.
Ribble's order support and customer service were great throughout; they patiently answered my many questions (Emma from customer service, for example). It was a pleasure dealing with people who are clearly enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the bikes they make and sell.
