Having decided that I wanted the opportunity to ride anywhere and really take advantage of the local roads, lanes, byways and bridleways I decided that a do anything bike was required. Having been looking through the plethora of bikes that can do this I decided to go with Ribbles CGR AL. Being new to this type of riding I tentively went with a budget option, which I was a little concerned about. I needn’t have worried, the bike is absolutely fantastic. Rides and handles incredible well and just handles any terrain thrown on it. Would absolutely recommend
Replacing a steel-framed cross bike with hub gears, this is a bit of a change. Very pleased with the CGR - kind of does what it says on the tin - a bike for all seasons.
Well built, feels good quality and value for money. With 35mm tyres the ride is comfortable and forgiving, pleasantly surprised as I was expecting a more noticeable change from my steel frame.
Pleased with contemporary Tiagra groupset - shifting definitely on a par with my 105 groupset from 3 years ago. Mechanical disks a bit disappointing (my first disk brakes) - feel like I got better modulation and general stopping power from my well-set V-brakes, but they are improving a bit as they bed in.
I'm 6ft 3, XL frame seems about the right size for a relatively relaxed position - can ride the hoods semi-upright (90% of my urban cycling), but tuck a little if speeding up. If you have a particularly short body/arms, or want a significantly more upright riding position, you could consider a size down.
Of note there was a bit of delay on delivery, but Ribble kept me well updated, and offered a genuine apology. Bit of cliché, but would certainly recommend the CGR-AL if you want a bit of a do-it-all - pleased with my purchase.
